Primary 2 Maths Topics and Practice

About Primary 2 mathematics

Primary 2 extends early number sense into larger quantities and more precise ways to describe them. The Singapore MOE syllabus takes whole-number work up to 1,000, develops addition and subtraction with three-digit numbers, and strengthens multiplication and division through the tables of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10. Learners also compare unit and like fractions, add and subtract like fractions within one whole, and write money using dollars and cents in decimal notation.

Measurement becomes broader too. Children use metres for length, kilograms and grams for mass, and litres for liquid volume. They tell time to the minute, compare and describe common two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, and read picture graphs where one picture may stand for more than one item. These topics ask learners to choose a sensible unit or representation, then explain what the result tells them.

The year is not simply a longer list of calculations. Place value helps children interpret a three-digit number and decide whether an answer is reasonable. Fractions make equal parts visible, while decimal notation connects familiar money amounts to written numbers. Multiplication and division grow from groups and sharing, so seeing how the two operations relate can help a child check an answer and select a method.

Singapore Math Drills provides MOE-aligned Primary practice, progressive hints and worked solutions. Its interactive skill map lets a parent review progress and start a focused drill on a subtopic, rather than having to choose a broad unit each time. When a learner gets stuck, a hint can make the next step visible; the worked explanation gives a chance to revisit the reasoning after the question is finished.

For families, a helpful routine is to connect a written problem back to a real quantity: what is being counted, measured, shared or compared? Encourage your learner to name the unit and describe why an operation fits. Those habits make the transition to Primary 3 smoother, when numbers grow again and fractions, measurement and data call for more connections across ideas.

What changes from Primary 1

P2 extends whole-number work from 100 to 1,000 and adds unit and like fractions, decimal notation for money, broader metric measurement, time to the minute and picture graphs with scales. Learners begin applying familiar ideas across a wider range of quantities and units.
