3. Let them work it out by hand
Resist the urge to jump in. - Praising the answer instead of the effort. "You're so clever!" ties your child's self-worth to being right, which makes mistakes feel threatening. "I like how you drew that out" praises the process, which is what you actually want repeated.
- Marathon catch-up sessions before a test. Cramming the night before a review feels responsible, but it teaches the brain to dump information after the test. Steady daily practice beats it every time.
- Comparing siblings or classmates. Each child has their own pace. Comparison breeds anxiety, and anxious children avoid the very subject they need to practise. Keep the focus on their progress against their last week.
Avoiding these four does more for your child's maths than any extra worksheet. The aim is a calm, repeatable habit — not a nightly performance.
