Has My Child Really Mastered This Topic?

Your child brings home a good score on a topic. A month later, the same kind of question appears — and they're stuck again. Sound familiar? It's one of the most common and most frustrating experiences for a parent, and it points to an uncomfortable truth: a mark can lie. A score tells you what happened on one day, with one set of questions, possibly with a hint or a lucky guess. It doesn't tell you whether your child has actually mastered the topic.

So how do you tell the difference between "got the marks" and "truly understands"? Here's what mastery really looks like — and how to check for it.

Marks vs mastery: what's the difference?

A good mark can come from several places that aren't understanding:

  • Recognition, not recall. The child remembers the type of question from recent practice but couldn't reproduce the method cold a few weeks later.
  • Hints and prompts. With a nudge ("remember to draw the bar model"), they get there. Without it, they don't.
  • Guessing on multiple choice. A one-in-four chance, repeated, inflates a score.
  • Procedural mimicry. They follow the steps they were shown without understanding why, so a small twist in the question throws them completely.

Real mastery is none of these. It's the ability to get the right answer on the first try, without hints, on a question they haven't just seen — and to still do it weeks later. That's a much higher bar than a single test score, and it's the bar that actually predicts how your child will do on the PSLE, where questions are unfamiliar and unhinted.

The forgetting curve — why "she got it" doesn't last

Here's the science that explains the month-later collapse. Psychologists have long documented the forgetting curve: after we learn something, our memory of it decays rapidly unless it's revisited. Without review, a child can lose the majority of what they learned within a week or two.

The antidote is spaced review — deliberately bringing a topic back just as it's about to fade. Each time your child successfully recalls it, the memory resets stronger and decays more slowly. This is why the child who revisits fractions briefly every week outperforms the child who "finished" fractions a month ago and never looked back. Mastery isn't a moment you reach; it's a state you maintain.

How to check for real mastery at home

You don't need a test bank to probe whether understanding is genuine. Try these:

  1. Ask for the why, not just the answer. "How did you know to do that?" A child who truly understands can explain their reasoning. A child who memorised steps goes quiet.
  2. Change one number or one word. Take a problem they "got" and tweak it slightly. Mastery transfers; mimicry doesn't.
  3. Come back to it next week, unannounced. If they can still do it cold, that's mastery. If it's gone, it was never fully there.
  4. Watch for hint-dependence. Notice how often they need a prompt to start. Frequent prompting is a sign the foundation is shaky.

These checks are simple, but doing them consistently across every topic, for every child, is more than most parents can manage by hand. That's where the right tools help.

  1. Struggling — frequent errors even with support; the foundation isn't in place yet. The fix is usually to step back to the prerequisite skill, not to push harder on the current one.

  3. Proficient — reliably correct on familiar questions without hints, but a novel twist can still trip them up.
